| October 4, 2011 | Posted by Dani under Eating, Nutrition, Random |
Here’s what I’m eating today….because I think you’re just dying to know. 5am – a version of this sweet potato protein muffin for my pre-gym snack 7:15am – 1/2 cup oats, 1 scoop protein powder, 1 banana, 1 cup milk (I think if I use a banana, next time I”ll just use water…this was a lot to eat and lots of carbs too). 9:30am – 16oz latte with 2% milk, no sweetener of any kind, no flavour shots either. I… Continue Reading
I <3 Lentils
| July 14, 2011 | Posted by Dani under Eating, Homemade Goodness |
Especially stewed ones. Here is a recipe for a great lentil snack or lunch accompaniment. You’ll need: Lentils (duh)…1lb will give you about 4-5 servings Onion, garlic, celery, seasoning pepper Salt and pepper Thyme, basil, rosemary Tomato Ketchup or tomato paste (not super necessary though) To give your lentils some good flavour, rinse them off and soak them in water with chopped garlic for at least an hour. Chop up your seasonings and herbs (oh, I used what we in… Continue Reading
Yet Another Energy Drink
| February 9, 2011 | Posted by Dani under Eating |
Because there aren’t enough “feel good” drinks on the market, we’ve got another one to consider – welcome EBOOST. The website calls it “a healthy energy drink mix” that helps everything from increasing focus, hangovers, endurance, fatigue, workout recovery, etc. Basically, if you’re feeling anything other than happy and peppy, Vitalize Labs, LLC (the makers of the stuff) wants to you drink EBOOST. Of course I checked out the ingredients, and its a bunch of vitamins and a couple… Continue Reading
Trying Out MyFitnessPal
| January 20, 2011 | Posted by Dani under Eating, Reviews |
Try as I may, I have never been able to track what I eat for more than one day. I did DailyBurn, I tried Calorie Count, now I’m onto MyFitnessPal. A couple months ago, I treated myself to an iPod Touch and one day, downloaded six health & fitness apps. Three weeks after I downloaded the app, I decided to use it. So I put in all my info (weight, age, goal, etc). Then about a week after that, I… Continue Reading
Dark Chocolate Is Good For You!
| October 8, 2010 | Posted by Dani under Eating |
Studies show that eating 1.6 ounces of dark chocolate daily can be good for you! Dark chocolate contains a higher percentage of cocoa…cocoa is rich in antioxidants (believed to help the body’s cells resist damage caused by free radicals that are formed by normal bodily processes such as breathing and from environmental contaminants like cigarette smoke). Look for chocolate that is at least 70% dark chocolate and only a small amount is needed. Unfortunately, recent studies have shown that the… Continue Reading
What is not a RED Grapefruit?
| September 28, 2010 | Posted by Dani under Eating, Rants |
This….this is not a RED grapefruit *irritated* Purchased three RED grapefruits and spent friggin’ $4….that is a lot for an unemployed person like me. It was bad enough the the damn grapefruits were light as a feather (indicating their lack of juice) but they are not….RED! WTF….isn’t there a law against false advertising? They weren’t even pink…or pinkish. You know what, I blame this on myself. I should have known that the RED grapefruit bought in a huge supermarket in… Continue Reading
Ital …the Original “Eating Clean” Lifestyle
| September 21, 2010 | Posted by Dani under Eating |
There is a ton of talk now about ‘eating clean’ (basically, avoidance of eating anything processed), but eating clean has been apart of the Rastafari community forever; the food they make is called Ital. Ital, which comes from the word vital, is a way of preparing and cooking food consistent with Rastafarian beliefs: no processed foods, no preserved foods, nothing with chemicals, no meat, (most times) no fish, (most times) no salt. Preparing ital often means only seasoning the food… Continue Reading
Why Drink Green Tea?
| September 9, 2010 | Posted by Dani under Eating |
I can’t stand green tea; it tastes like ass to me. Matter of fact, I’m not really a big fan of herbal tea. I LOVE my tea British style: black tea, with cream and sugar. While drinking black tea does have its benefits (antioxidants, reduced risk for heart disease), I know I should try to drink more green tea. Why?: Green tea has catechins (antioxidants) that hunt free radicals which damage DNA, and can cause cancer and blood clots The… Continue Reading
Consumer Reports Test Protein Shakes: This Isn’t Good
| September 3, 2010 | Posted by Dani under Eating |
After tweeting that I was about to drink a Muscle Milk Light, FitYoginiRunner responded with a link to her blog post and a Consumer Reports article on the possible dangers of consuming protein shakes/powders. According to their tests, many of the popular protein products contain above the allowable levels of arsenic, lead, and cadmium. Here is FitYogini’s post and here is the Consumer Reports article. I use or have used three of the brands listed, which freaks me out. Protein… Continue Reading
Alterna-Milks???
| August 12, 2010 | Posted by Dani under Eating |
Cow’s milk, rice milk, soy milk, and almond milk. So many things milks to choose from, not sure what to do? Below are the results of my extensive research to help you make up your mind. Cow’s Milk What is it really? Besides white liquid that comes from the mammary glands of mammals? That’s kinda it. How is it made? Squeeze the teets (or boobs) of the creature (cow, donkey, goat, sheep, etc) to get the milk out. Kill the… Continue Reading
When Stressed, Pig Out or Starve?
| July 26, 2010 | Posted by Dani under Eating, Fatty Boom-Boom |
I feel like I see a ton of articles about people pigging out when they’re stressed . But when I’m stressed or sad, I want nothing to do with food…which is insane considering that I’m always hungry. What is it about people that lead them to divert from their normal eating patterns when under emotional/mental duress? I came across this great article on Psychology Today that explains why many people overeat or eat junk foods when stressed out. In a… Continue Reading
Dani Hearts Cereal
| July 8, 2010 | Posted by Dani under Addiction, Eating |
I’m also addicted to cereal….it really is the world’s most perfect food: its got everything your body needs in one bowl (or, if you’re like me) or a mug. I can (and have) consumed cereal for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. My favs are Banana Nut Crunch, Post Honey Bunches of Oats, and Kellogs Cocoa Krispies. The problem is, as I was explaining to Amanda yesterday, when I eat, my mind thinks its the last thing I’ll ever eat (like back… Continue Reading
I'm Not That Different From a Cow
| June 30, 2010 | Posted by Dani under Eating |
This is purely regarding my eating habits. When I was employed, I had fairly structured daily eating habits: 7am breakfast (eggs, cereal, or oatmeal), 10am snack (fruit or yogurt), 12pm proper lunch (protein, good carbs, veggies), 3:30pm snack (chick pea salad or some light protein), and supper (edamame, some kinda of broccoli thingie, scrambled egg whites, or some kind of super-light food). But now I eat little things all day; I don’t think I’ve had a proper meal in a… Continue Reading
