Revised Dietary Guidelines
| January 31, 2011 | Posted by Dani under Nutrition |
A friend of mine drew my attention to an article published in the NY Times about the US Government’s new dietary guidelines. The article can be summarized in two words: eat less. Eat less saturated fat, eat less sodium, eat less processed foods. Analysts of the nutrition guidelines laud the revisions as being more upfront and less vague; the guidelines now say to make sure half your plate is covered in veggies instead of being lame and just saying ‘eat… Continue Reading
Today’s Workout…
| January 31, 2011 | Posted by Dani under Today's Workout |
… was legs, legs, legs. Have I ever told you guys how much I love working my legs?….it just makes me feel so powerful…lol. I’m still sticking with a basic workout for now; still working on getting some strength back. I’m still reluctant to do squats because I don’t want to put too much weight on my foot yet but I did pistol squats instead. I learnt about pistol squats during my physical therapy for my IT band. I chose… Continue Reading
Guess Who Can Walk Again?!?!
| January 20, 2011 | Posted by Dani under Injuries |
After five sessions of ultrasound therapy and a follow-up doc visit a week ago, I can walk again! Doc gave me the OK to ease back into normal weight-bearing activities. After he uttered those words and I suppressed the tears, my first question was “when can I jog again?” (clearly, I’m a glutton for pain) and the second question was “when can I wear heels?” He just kind of looked at me with a “OK fool, if you must….” look.… Continue Reading
Trying Out MyFitnessPal
| January 20, 2011 | Posted by Dani under Eating, Reviews |
Try as I may, I have never been able to track what I eat for more than one day. I did DailyBurn, I tried Calorie Count, now I’m onto MyFitnessPal. A couple months ago, I treated myself to an iPod Touch and one day, downloaded six health & fitness apps. Three weeks after I downloaded the app, I decided to use it. So I put in all my info (weight, age, goal, etc). Then about a week after that, I… Continue Reading
Abandonment
| January 20, 2011 | Posted by Dani under Random |
I think it has been about a week since my last post! I’m absolutely awful…. treating my blog like a fugly step-child siiiigh But, in my half-a$$ed defense, I’ve been fairly busy. My laptop has been forming the fool (of course it would wait until I left the US to act up) and my grandmother has been ill and in the hospital for the past five days. Many will say this is normal….for grandmothers to be ill. But not mine… Continue Reading

Guess Who Went to the Gym Today?!?!?!
| January 3, 2011 | Posted by Dani under Injuries, Today's Workout |
Meeeeeeeeee! You cannot begin to imagine how elated I felt waking my behind up at 4:30am, walking hobbling into the gym, sitting on that first machine, and using my muscles! Of course I couldn’t do cardio (because of my wonky foot) but I did do a very simple back and shoulder workout and abs. I kept it basic so I can ease my body back into working out again. I joined a new gym called Xtreme Health & Fitness Ltd (located… Continue Reading
Curried Veggies
| January 3, 2011 | Posted by Dani under Homemade Goodness |
Oh how I love me some good curry. Depending on how it is made, curry can be fairly oily but when I make mine, I don’t use too much. Here’s how to make some healthy veggie curry: 1) Gather your favourite veggies and chop them up. This particular veggie curry has in pumpkin (or your can use butternut squash), carrots, eggplant, bodie beans, celery, onion, and garlic. Chop up the onion, celery, and garlic a lot smaller than you would… Continue Reading
What Is It??: Sugar Apple
| January 2, 2011 | Posted by Dani under What Is It??? |
It’s a bit wonky-looking on the outside, but it’s so sweet and creamy on the inside….this is a sugar apple! Also known as sweetsop or custard apple, sugar apples are grown in the Caribbean (duuuh), Central America, and South East Asia; basically, in warm climates. It smells sweet, tastes sweet, and each little pod is filled with black seeds. Sugar apples are good for you because they’ve got: lots of vitamin C – flu season anyone? fibre – two sugar… Continue Reading
