Why Drink Green Tea?

I can’t stand green tea; it tastes like ass to me. Matter of fact, I’m not really a big fan of herbal tea. I LOVE my tea British style: black tea, with cream and sugar. While drinking black tea does have its benefits (antioxidants, reduced risk for heart disease), I know I should try to drink more green tea. Why?: Green tea has catechins (antioxidants) that hunt free radicals which damage DNA, and can cause cancer and blood clots The… Continue Reading

Eating Banana Fritters Takes Me Back Home

I love love love banana fritters! Banana fritters are sorta really thin pancakes; they are much smaller and thinner and don’t have in as many ingredients. They go great with a real Antiguan breakfast of sal’fish (salted codfish) and chop-up (spinach done up). Or have them as a sweet treat with your lunch Don’t feel guilty eating them: they’ve got very little flour and sugar and very little fat (no oil, butter, etc). I could have added other stuff to… Continue Reading

Why Do My Muscles Hurt After a Workout?

DOMS is why. Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) would be why your ass muscles hurt after doing dead-lifts or hamstring curls, or it would be why it hurts to turn the steering wheel after a bicep workout, or it would be why it sucks to bend and look in the fridge after a lower back workout. It is muscle pain/soreness that you feel 12-48 hours after exercising, especially if you’re just starting a workout program, if you’ve exerted yourself more… Continue Reading

Hearty Lentil Walnut Burgers

I saw a tweet from @ohsheglows about just making lentil walnut burgers. So I went to her site to have a look at the recipe, decided that it looked good, and make it tonight. I modified it a bit from the Oh She Glows recipe. 3/4 cup lentils,  rinsed 3/4 cup walnuts, toasted 1/3 cup breadcrumbs 1 tsp curry powder 3 cloves garlic little chopped onion little chopped celery Salt and pepper to taste dash of paprika dash of nutmeg… Continue Reading

Consumer Reports Test Protein Shakes: This Isn’t Good

After tweeting that I was about to drink a Muscle Milk Light, FitYoginiRunner responded with a link to her blog post and a Consumer Reports article on the possible dangers of consuming protein shakes/powders. According to their tests, many of the popular protein products contain above the allowable levels of arsenic, lead, and cadmium. Here is FitYogini’s post and here is the Consumer Reports article. I use or have used three of the brands listed, which freaks me out. Protein… Continue Reading

CFN Reviews: LARABAR

Lately, I’ve been hearing lots of people talking about LARABAR and I decided to see what all the hype was about. What is a LARABAR? It is actual food smooshed into a cute little package. Its not polymonocarbonsorbate or calcium carbonate or any particular nutrient; it is food, actual food, with ingredients you recognize. It is “gluten free, dairy free, soy free, non-GMO (genetically modified foods and organisms), is vegan, and kosher”. So while at Yes! Organic Market yesterday I… Continue Reading

The Toe Shoes Venture Outdoors

I know, I know….I’ve never taken my toe shoes outside?  I do my p90x in my carpeted apartment in my toe shoes and so didn’t want to take them outdoors (the thought of outside germs in my apt icks me out). But I grew a pair and took them out on Friday. It was so odd feeling the ground underneath…every crack and crevice. I did feel super-light though. Then on Monday, I went jogging in them aaaaaaaaaaaaaaand, I like! I… Continue Reading

Feeling Uber Wobbly

I was away visiting my grandmother for a few days and I only exercised for one of those days :-/ Pretty sad, I know. But, in my half-assed defense, I also didn’t just sit on my ass. I did a TON walking around NYC with my family and friends. The one day I did exercise, I went to Central Park. I started at one end (59th St), walked to around 70th St, then jogged to the other end at 110th… Continue Reading
