What To Do With Acorn Squash

Ever had an acorn squash randomly sitting around your kitchen and wasn’t too sure what to do with it? Today is your lucky day because I have a quick, easy, and cheap solution for you!: make “potato” salad. Most people would just cut it in half, slap on a bunch of butter and sugar, and bake but I have a healthy option for you. Acorn squash is very high in vitamin A and also gives us vitamin C, fibre, potassium,… Continue Reading

CFN Reviews: Gaiam Pilates Bodyband Workout

While waiting on Anna to go riding and running (our mini reverse duathlon) yesterday, I decided to try the Gaiam Pilates Bodyband Workout DVD I bought ages ago. I absolutely love and believe in pilates so I was a little excited to try this one. I unrolled my mat, took out the band and, popped in the DVD; of course, Dadli was all up in my biz. Ana Caban was the instructor (this is actually my second DVD with her);… Continue Reading

Balls for Dinner

Ummm, that should have been turkey meatballs…sorry. Anna gave me the inspiration to make the turkey meatballs, except I added a TON of stuff to the ground turkey. The night before I was going to cook the balls, I seasoned one pound of lean ground turkey with the ingredients in the left column in the table below. When ready to cook, I added the ingredients on the right and formed into (approximately) one inch diameter balls (I chuckle to myself… Continue Reading

Getting Sick When the Weather Fluctuates

It is 80 degrees one day, then 55 degrees at night. Or 85 degrees today and 63 degrees tomorrow. Welcome to spring and fall when these temperature changes are common. Lots of people report getting sick (fatigue, sneezing, sore throats, etc) during these temperature fluctuations. And while it is scientifically shown that neither cold weather, weather fluctuations, not wet hair causes people to get ill, folks still sniffle and sneeze a lot during these times (heeeeello circulating upper respiratory infections).… Continue Reading

Oatmeal Pizza?…I Kid You Not

This is another recipe from Oxygen Magazine and I was definitely skeptical during the first few minutes of making this, especially when combining the oatmeal and ground turkey together (that was kind of….odd, shall we say). Also, its a tiny little personal pan pizza, and I mean tiny; it was about six inches in diameter. I modified a little bit from the recipe in the magazine. Here is what you need: 1/2 cup oats 1/2 tsp baking powder 1/4 teaspoon… Continue Reading

What is not a RED Grapefruit?

This….this is not a RED grapefruit *irritated* Purchased three RED grapefruits and spent friggin’ $4….that is a lot for an unemployed person like me. It was bad enough the the damn grapefruits were light as a feather (indicating their lack of juice) but they are not….RED! WTF….isn’t there a law against false advertising? They weren’t even pink…or pinkish. You know what, I blame this on myself. I should have known that the RED grapefruit bought in a huge supermarket in… Continue Reading

Healthy Cookies!

I love, love, love reading Oxygen Magazine for their workout ideas and healthy eating recipes (I plan on making a bunch soon). I tried one recipe yesterday, Fat-Burning Cookies. The ingredients in these cookies are great for your body: 1.5 cups whole wheat flour 2 cups whey protein powder 1tsp baking powder 2 tsp ground cinnamon 1.5 cups low-fat small-curd cottage cheese 1/2 cup honey 1/4 cup canola oil 1 egg 2tsp vanilla extract 1 cup rolled oats 1/2 cup… Continue Reading

Today’s Workout…

…is only half complete. I just came back from quick jog (just shy of 3 miles) and this afternoon I’ll do P90x Kenpo. After my job a made myself a nice smoothie….a little different than what I usually do: 1/2 cup cooled green tea, 1/2 cup skim milk, 1/2 cup each (roughly) of blueberries and raspberries, and a scoop of protein powder. Ital …the Original “Eating Clean” Lifestyle

There is a ton of talk now about ‘eating clean’ (basically, avoidance of eating anything processed), but eating clean has been apart of the Rastafari community forever; the food they make is called Ital. Ital, which comes from the word vital, is a way of preparing and cooking food consistent with Rastafarian beliefs: no processed foods, no preserved foods, nothing with chemicals, no meat, (most times) no fish, (most times) no salt. Preparing ital often means only seasoning the food… Continue Reading

Today’s Workout…

… didn’t happen as it was my P90x rest day. Yesterday was supposed to be Kenpo but I woke up super early after going to sleep very late and I knew that there was NO way that I was going to be alert enough for a workout DVD in my apartment. So I decided to hightail it outside on my bike. Last time I went biking on the usual trail, there was lots of annoying construction and yesterday it was… Continue Reading

12 Questions for: Drew

Several-time Ironman participant and triathlete extraordinaire, Drew, takes time out of his busy schedule to answer CFN’s ?s About YOU! 1. How do you maintain your sexiness? It’s half genetics and half putting in the time whether it’s running, biking, or swimming. Also, even though during peak training I’m burning calories faster than I can take them in, the foods I wind up eating make a big difference. Lots of small, good choices pay off over time. 2. What physical… Continue Reading

Stuff On My Brain Today

I was woken up today by maintenance men…an army of them. They’re gone, but now my apartment smells like maintenance men…my bathroom does anyway and I can’t stand the smell. So while I waited for them to finish their job, I made myself a cup of tea, sat down at my comp and got productive. Besides looking for images of Stewie’s brain, I signed up for a couple public health events downtown. Why public health? Because that what I have… Continue Reading

Mealtime!: Baked Chicken, Sweet Potato Fries, and “Pasta” Marinara

I’m in a cooking mood! So I decided to go with chicken and sweet potato fries with spaghetti squash in marinara sauce. As healthy as chicken breast is supposed to be, I can’t stand it. So when I do chicken, I use chicken drumsticks or thighs with the skin removed. I season the chicken (usually the day before) with Worcestershire sauce, seasoned salt, pepper, garlic powder, paprika, onions, garlic, and pretty much anything in my seasoning cupboard. Oh, I also… Continue Reading

Organic or Bust

I was watching The Doctors tv show today and they did a segment about pesticides in our fruits and veggies and how much of a problem it is. Of course they encouraged viewers to buy organic produce but if that option isn’t possible they provided two lists of fruits and veggies you should buy organic and ones you don’t need to buy organic. This isn’t the first time I’ve heard of the ‘dirty dozen’ or ‘clean 15′ and I’ve been… Continue Reading

The Great Peanut Butter Watch of 2010: Update 5

After not having peanut butter for THREE weeks (I deserve a medal…it was hard….I needed it), I felt I was ready to buy another jar. So I was at the supermarket yesterday with Anna and we got to the peanut butter aisle. Let me tell you, it was really hard not to pick up my usual crack-laced brand. So she suggested trying a more natural peanut butter and picked out Smart Balance Rich Roast Chunky Peanut Butter. I got home… Continue Reading

CFN Reviews: Ezekiel 4:9 Bread

I wanted to know what the hype was about Ezekiel 4:9 Bread so I purchased it….first of all, it is friggin expensive; this ‘ish costs almost $6. I grimaced and made the purchase. What’s the deal with naming a bread (which, by the way is flourless) after a bible verse? Ezekiel 4:9 says: “Take also unto thee Wheat, and Barley, and beans, and lentils, and millet, and Spelt, and put them in one vessel, and make bread of it…” …and… Continue Reading

Today’s Workout…

…was not P90x but a reverse duathlon! A duathlon is a race where you run, bike, then run again; today, Anna and I biked, ran, then biked again. We biked about four miles to the lake, jogged around the lake (1.5miles), then biked back home. Adding the run really made today’s workout great; the legs were nice and tight by the time I got home. When I have workouts like the one today (AKA challenging, different), I feel like nothing… Continue Reading

Interview With a Former Smoker

Johnny is a restaurateur, a father, and a former smoker. I remember when Johnny told me a few weeks ago that he, along with two others in his restaurant, were going to quit smoking in a few days. The next time I saw him, it was three days after he has quit; he said he was irritable and that anyone who pissed him off should be careful. About two weeks later, I saw dramatic change in Johnny’s complexion; he kinda looked like he… Continue Reading
