@Candid FitNut 5:17am pre-workout snack…homemade protein cookie. P.S.: you know you get up too early to workout when you put on your underwear, which happens to be a thong, wrong…not inside-out, but the part that’s supposed to be in your buttcrack isn’t in the crack but around your hip siiiiiigh Continue Reading

What I’m Eating Today

Here’s what I’m eating today….because I think you’re just dying to know. 5am – a version of this sweet potato protein muffin for my pre-gym snack 7:15am – 1/2 cup oats, 1 scoop protein powder, 1 banana, 1 cup milk (I think if I use a banana, next time I”ll just use water…this was a lot to eat and lots of carbs too). 9:30am – 16oz latte with 2% milk, no sweetener of any kind, no flavour shots either. I… Continue Reading

Yo-yo Diet

Random Rant

I’m not a super health freak by the stretch of any imagination….I’m not vegan (although I did try the vegetarian thing for like 7 years and, boy, did I miss me some curry goat and oxtail), I don’t nosh on granola all the time (or ever, for that matter), I don’t drink only almond/soy/rice milk, I don’t use stevia/truvia, I don’t eat/buy only organic foods, and I don’t run marathons. But I do try to eat as healthy as I’m… Continue Reading

Neglect at Its Finest

@Candid FitNut

Ahhhhhhhh boy I have no excuses, no reason, nada, zip, zero, zilch why I haven’t touched my blog in over a month. Laziness perhaps? Lack of motivation? Definitely lack of motivation. I haven’t really been lazy, per se. I’ve just been going through a funk, I guess you’d say. I was unmotivated about everything in my life. But I had to slap myself very quickly before it got out of hand. I think for the most part, I’m over the funky… Continue Reading

Today’s Workout…

sneakerscartoonforAD2

….was called ‘I need a new leg routine’. I finally did some squats today….first time doing them since my surgery so that was a bright spot in my morning workout, otherwise, I was definitely bored. Now I have to go patrolling the web and my old fitness magazine for some leg ideas. Right now I do squats (which I want to keep), deadlifts, leg extension, cable kickbacks, abductors, and adductors. I still can’t do lunges or impact anything. We’ll see… Continue Reading

Today’s Workout…

Exercising

…damn near made my arms fall off. First of all, not only was my body aching from doing NTC two days in a row but I also did this killer arm workout, and cardio of course. The NTC definitely has my legs and back aching from all the jumping (which I still can’t do too much of due to my lovely feet) and lifting and twisting. Love it though. I’m thinking I my try a 45 minute NTC workout tomorrow.… Continue Reading

Healthy Caribbean Coalition

Healthy Caribbean Coalition

If you know me, you’d know that I have my Masters of Public Health, so this is definitely an interest of mine. On March 18, the Healthy Caribbean Coalition www.healthycaribbean.org launched “Get the Message,” a civil society-led text-based social and traditional media communication advocacy campaign to inform people of the region about chronic diseases and their risk factors, and support Caribbean leaders at the UN Summit. The campaign seeks to mobilize and empower Caribbean people by better informing them of chronic diseases and… Continue Reading

Nike Training Club

ntc2

I don’t know why it took me so long to download the Nike Training Club (NTC) app and try it out. Wow! I really wasn’t too sure what to expect. When you start up the app, everything is right there for you: do you want to do cardio, build strength, do specific focused  but shorter workouts? Just pick then choose your fitness level. Then it pulls up a few workouts and all you have to do is pick one. I… Continue Reading

Why Carnival is Good for the Body….sorta, sorta not

The Man, The Chicken @Candid FitNut

If you were going to be parading up and down the streets in a tiny bit of a “costume”, which is really just a bikini with some beads and feathers, wouldn’t that be enough motivation to get your a$$ into shape? Here is how the preparation for our carnival (generally) goes down: 3 months before carnival – your mas troupe (the group you sign up with to wear their costume) has what is known as band launching where their costumes… Continue Reading

Carnival is Over

My Itty Bitty Teenie Weeny Mas Costume @Candid FitNut

Carnival is over and the return the normal life begins, albeit very slowly. It all ended last weekend and I’m still recovering. This week has been an absolute FAIL: I wasn’t as productive at work, I’ve barely cooked, I only managed to go to the supermarket yesterday to stock up on my normal foods, and my house is in need of a good cleaning. I’m regrouping and I’m almost back to being normal. Continue Reading

Kudos to Vogue Italia

voguecurvy

I am a fan of Vogue Italia for their special issues. Their all-black issue was amazeballs (though it had its faults) and now they have a curvy-girl issue. I’m absolutely loving the high-end shoot of these girls with some meat on their bones. Check it out here: Vogue Italia.   Continue Reading

Today’s Workout…

sneakerscartoon3

…was lazy-ish. I did 45 minutes of cardio but because of my short attention span this morning, I did 15 minutes each on the ellipitcal, stairmaster, and spinning bike. Then I did like half my back workout. It’s going to be a freakin’ struggle to go to the gym for the rest of the week and go to work and do anything productive, for that matter. I have what is known as Carnival Fever….it is a sickness detrimental to any… Continue Reading

I’m sitting here at work noshing on my (homemade) hummus with sweet pepper and celery sticks, contemplating what my workout for today will be. I didn’t go today at my usual 5:30am so I’m going to cope with the afternoon crowd. Not looking forward to it, but I’m sure I’ll see some new and interesting faces (read as: cute guys). While having my lunch, I was cruising the web and found some interesting things….like this recipe for banana naan. I… Continue Reading

Gym Pet Peeve

boy_shouting_sq

Nope, not kids in the gym…actually, that would annoy the living daylights out of me, but I’m talking shouting and being all loud in the gym. I’m not talking about casual laughing and lively conversation while working out, but I’m talking about cackling, moaning, just plain old being super loud. Last week these two chicks were on the elliptical and I was unfortunate enough to be beside them. Well, lawd have mercy, I could barely hear my music and focus… Continue Reading

Today’s Workout…

gym romance

…was my same arm workout from last week. But today was a little bit more yummy that usual….I’ve got my usual gym eye-candy who I see 2-3 times a week, but today was someone new. Well, not exactly new….I’ve seen him before but we’ve only recently began to say hello, then yesterday was the name exchange, and today…lol, I love it…he showed me the proper way to do a particular exercise. But in all seriousness, when he demonstrated, I realized… Continue Reading

I <3 Lentils

Me, a Knife, Veggies, and My Kitchen

Especially stewed ones. Here is a recipe for a great lentil snack or lunch accompaniment. You’ll need: Lentils (duh)…1lb will give you about 4-5 servings Onion, garlic, celery, seasoning pepper Salt and pepper Thyme, basil, rosemary Tomato Ketchup or tomato paste (not super necessary though) To give your lentils some good flavour, rinse them off and soak them in water with chopped garlic for at least an hour. Chop up your seasonings and herbs (oh, I used what we in… Continue Reading

Today’s Workout….

triceps

…was non-existant. I know, I know…no good. I was just too tired. I got home super late last night and I just couldn’t wake up at my usual 4:40am to haul ass to the gym. Oh yes…I’ve been back at the gym for two weeks now! But yesterday’s workout was effing nutso: my arms. [pic source] And it is very rare (probably never) that I’ll say an arm workout challenged me. I was going through some old fitness magazines looking… Continue Reading

Green Juice for Breakfast

Green Juice @CandidFitNut

Yeeeep, I drank that this morning. Rewind. I’ve been reading tweets and articles about the amazing benefits of drinking green juice (allegedly lots of energy, low cal, low fat, loads of vitamins and minerals, blah blah blah). So ‘Dani, the Bright’, took her behind to the supermarket purchased a ton of ish for this supposedly fantabulous juice. So I got home from the gym (yep! I’m back at it, post-op update coming tomorrow) after 7 this morning and took all… Continue Reading

56 Days Post-Op

It’s been almost two months since my surgery and I’m feeling good about things…today I am anyway. My walking has definitely improved and I don’t have that “stalkerish gait” my boss says I had anymore. I still wear my foot gear with my men’s Nike slippers, but I’m certainly happy to be out and about. My feet still swell a little and there’s definitely some discomfort when I try to walk fast or go up/down stairs, but I’m really hoping… Continue Reading

Dani Reviews: The Hollywood Trainer Pilates DVD

hollywood-trainer-pilates-jeanette-jenkins

For the past 3 weeks or so, I’ve been going between my 20 minute pilates DVDs and my P90x Ab RipperX disc….I limited myself to these as I didn’t want to mess up my already messed up feet post-surgery. So since I’ve been walking for the last few days, I decided to challenge myself a bit and do Jeanette Jenkins’ AKA The Hollywood Trainer’s Pilates DVD. I say challenge because it is 45 minutes long (which would be the… Continue Reading

39 Days Post-Op

39days post op

I’m not in the greatest of moods today, nor was I yesterday, snapping at those unfortunate to be around me. In good news, I’ve been walking for the last six days. I was definitely wobbly at first but I’m a bit more stable now. I’m still pretty slow, but at least I’m on my feet. I will say that being on your ass 99.7% of the time for five weeks does a number on you: it’s hard to bend you… Continue Reading
